Women’s Golf Wins Loyola Invitational

first_img The Drake University women’s golf team took first place in the Loyola Invitational on Tuesday afternoon. The win is the first time the Bulldogs have finished in first place at an event since the UNI Invitational last spring.Drake finished with a 54-hole score of 925 (310-307-308) to hold off South Dakota, who finished six strokes behind the Bulldogs, and host team Loyola who finished 12 strokes back after a tournament-low 301 in the final round. The win is Drake’s 11th top-10 finish in their last 12 events going back to April of 2018.”It’s so great to get a team win today,” said head coach Rachael Pruett-Hornbaker. “We started off really strong this morning, and although we slipped a little as the round went on, I’m proud of the way the ladies kept their heads in the round. It’s that determination and focus that will help us all season.Sophomore Haeri Lee continued her hot start to the Fall season with a second-place finish to lead the Bulldogs. Lee’s 227 (78-74-75) was just three strokes behind the No. 1 overall individual, Katie Allen of Creighton. Kristen Giles also finished inside the top 10, her 229 (73-81-75) put her in a tie for fourth place. Sigurlaug Jonsdottir struggled in the last round, but still finished tied for 14th place with a 54-hole total of 236 (78-76-82), and Aimee Gerschke finished with a total of 237 (81-78-78) to tie for 17th. Freshman Abby Marting rounded out the Bulldogs’ competitors with a 243 (84-79-80) which was good for a top 25 finish. Competing as an individual, Sam Paulak played a strong third round to finish with a total of 240 (82-81-77) and tied for 20th.About what the win means going forward, Pruett-Hornbaker said, “I’m incredibly proud of the team for finishing off the win.
