Ken and Shari Carothers to present ‘Alaska: The Inside Passage’ at the Sumner County Historical and Genealogical Society meeting Monday

first_imgKen and Shari CarothersSubmitted to Sumner Newscow — On Monday, May 19, Ken and Shari Carothers, South Haven, will present the program ““Alaska: The Inside Passage.” In their fascinating presentation, Ken and Shari will share beautiful photographs and insider information from their unique perspective of living and teaching in Alaska to the Sumner County Historical and Genealogical Society members and guests at the Wellington Senior Center, 308 South Washington, Wellington at 6:30 p.m. Contact Jane Moore at 620-447-3266 in case of inclement weather.Ken and Shari Carothers, retired teachers for the Wellington School District and Intervention Strategists in Alaska, will share unique photographs and information on the inside passage to Alaska.  Ken and Shari will take the group on a photographic tour of Ketchikan, Sitka, and Juneau, Alaska, along with glaciers, salmon fish hatcheries, and much more.“The inside passage was what started the whole thing,” said Shari Carothers, adding that their first trip to Alaska was so amazing that they decided to go back and teach there.“Everyone says Alaska is beautiful,” Shari Carothers said, “But the most amazing thing was that we couldn’t sleep because there was too much to see.”“Juneau is the only capitol in the US that doesn’t have a road leading to it, you can only fly in or go in by boat,” Shari Carothers said, adding that they will share photographs of Juneau and the Mendenhall Glacier, and bring along new artifacts to show as well.“Have you ever wondered how salmon know which river to go back to?” Ken Carothers added that they will take you on a tour of a fish hatchery, and explain how the salmon know where to return to when it’s time to lay their own eggs.“Alaskans are very creative,” said Shari Carothers, “a lot of Alaska you have to invent something because you have a problem that you have to solve.”last_img
