Premier Darrell Dexter today, Aug. 22, expressed sadness over the death of peace activist Muriel Duckworth. “Muriel will be forever remembered as an ambassador of peace, defender of women’s rights, and champion of educational development,” said Premier Dexter. “I want to offer my condolences to her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched both directly and indirectly.” Ms. Duckworth was the recipient of many honours including the Lester B. Pearson Peace Medal and the Order of Canada. She also received honourary degrees from Dalhousie University and Mount Saint Vincent University. “I am grateful that I had the opportunity to speak with Muriel briefly this week to express my appreciation of how much she did for Nova Scotia, Canada and the world.” Premier Dexter said he was lucky to be one of many people around the world who experienced the support and personal encouragement that Muriel Duckworth offered daily.
