Image via: avirtualdominica.comThe Dominica Youth Environment Organization Inc (DYEO) has organized the 17th National Beach and Waterways Cleanup Campaign which is underway today. DYEO for the past years with support from an international organization; Ocean Conservancy, has hosted this activity. Thirty communities island-wide are expected to participate by cleaning their beaches/rivers and collect the data on the types of garbage collected. This data is submitted to DYEO afterward for use in its educational programmes. This year, DYEO has chosen the Salisbury Beach to clean along with the Salisbury Enhancement Committee. DYEO Executive Director Terry Raymond says the importance of the campaign is to clean up the data on the amount of garbage being collected over the years.“We want to continue to educate people that they re polluting the environment and the number one pollutant are plastic bottles. In some cases people dump garbage anywhere and in the wrong places. We want the young people to take better pride in their community so that when they think of their community they will be proud,” he said.According to Raymond, a clean environment will also boost the country’s tourism thrust.“A clean environment will leave a lasting impression on the visitors. We want to ensure that the campaign is done successfully,” he added. The activity commenced from 7 this morning.Dominica Vibes News Share LocalNews DYEO organizes major Saturday beach clean up by: – October 15, 2011last_img read more
