Investigativejournalism itself is under attack. Politicians cannot use the right to privacy in samethat ordinary citizens can. • Generation Z – Ambassadors to the Future of Work

first_imgIn the Digital Age, the landscape of the modern workplace is in constant flux. The rapid pace at which emerging technologies have evolved has begun to pay off big dividends for organizations who have embraced digital transformation. Both hard and software solutions have learned to integrate with one another to create new, more flexible business models designed to increase a company’s reach and offer greater opportunities for personalization, collaboration, information sharing and mobility.Bridging the generation gapThe influence of these changes on today’s workforce cannot be underestimated, especially when we consider that this meteoric rise has resulted in considerable discrepancies in the ways different generations view not just their work environment, but technology itself. To keep their employees happy across the board, companies are now placing greater emphasis on Diversity & Inclusion programs to address the generational divide within their ranks. With this in mind, Dell Technologies has recently commissioned a study by Dimensional Research to examine the impact today’s technology has on the mindset of Generation Z, aged 24 and below, who are expected to represent 20% of the workforce by 2020. By better understanding the changing needs, priorities and skills they require to succeed, organizations can form a more accurate picture of their own specific digital transformation requirements for enticing this younger breed of hyper-connected workers who consider technology second nature, and create a bridge between generations that will allow this new group to become ambassadors of digital change going forward. The changing definition of diversityBy definition, diversity comes in many forms. Whereas a decade ago it was measured primarily in terms of an employee’s sex, Gen Z does not show the same gender issues as its predecessors. As they begin to rise in popularity in the workforce, this issue is poised to resolve itself. This is further highlighted by the ways in which the human / machine partnership is changing job roles, leaving more automated tasks to computers and freeing up employees to orchestrate, innovate and plan new ways of working. As AI and other emerging techs begin to interact more closely with one another and increase emphasis on creativity in planning and team interaction, IT becomes more interesting to what were once considered stereotypically female traits. This has resulted in a greater number of women in IT roles across the board, a trend which shows no sign of stopping.Changing priorities, evolving methodsEngaging the interests and imagination of young workers is a highly productive way for organizations to discover interesting insights and create new methods of collaboration, while increasing the loyalty of a group who does not envision working for the same company for a lifetime. To better understand how to accomplish these goals, we must first examine Gen Z’s mindset:78% want to work with cutting edge technology to further their careersFor a generation who has grown up constantly connected and technologically advanced, the ability to use the same tech tools they have at home is extremely important. Companies unwilling to invest in digital transformation run the risk of frustrating younger workers, resulting in higher turnover and reduced efficiency. Personalization of the workplace is a key component for keeping them satisfied and loyal.47% want the ability to learn new skills and have new experiencesFor Gen Z, having the latest technology at their disposal not only means increased efficiency in the workplace, it also provides them with the proper tools to better their skills, keep them happy with their jobs, and discover new ways of working that rely more and more on the innovations found in emerging technologies.33% want to work for a socially or environmentally responsible organizationMore so than their predecessors, Gen Z is very concerned with the policies and ethics of the company they work for. Initiatives such as well-defined Corporate Social Responsibility programs and an environmentally aware outlook are important factors in attracting and retaining the younger set. Gen Z does not simply want a paycheck – they want to make a difference.44% want work that has meaning and purpose beyond just getting paidGen Z is socially active and places more emphasis on the concept of work / life balance than its older counterparts. They want more than just money for their efforts. This includes a stronger team mentality, greater mobility and the chance to work from home with a more fluid work schedule that better suits their personal and family needs. They see work as an extension of themselves, rather than a definition of who they are. To earn their loyalty, modern organizations need to prove their own.The value of reverse mentoringSurprisingly, though Gen Z relies more heavily on technology than their predecessors, they show an eagerness for more human interaction. They have made it clear that just because they are on their phones does not mean they are not interacting. In fact, 76% say that social media can be a valuable tool in the workplace. This desire to be part of a team and increase human communication in its various forms has resulted in a trend of reverse mentoring. Gen Z shows an eagerness to teach older generations when it comes to tech, not only to make their department as strong as possible, but so they themselves get the data they need quickly. A stunning 70% are willing to be mentors to others on the job, as they consider technology to be a strong ally for improving communication and the transfer of information, be it personal or work related. This gives added confidence and ability to potentially less tech savvy employees. From a company standpoint, this means that any investment in Digital Transformation will pay dividends more quickly. This same idea is mirrored in families, as grandchildren are teaching grandparents computer and mobile phone skills to improve communication and stay better connected. When mirrored in a work environment, efficiency is greatly increased for all.Changes in learning, changes in leadershipAs Dell Technologies’ Realize 2030 Vanson Bourne study has shown, the concept of learning is changing from what a potential employee has learned to how quickly he or she can learn as new solutions emerge. This highlights the increased need for forward thinking organizations to focus on how to entice and retain the best and brightest of this new breed of tech ambassadors. Investing in a solid digital transformation initiative with a focus on creating a personalized workplace that suits every generation is the surest way to keep your ambassadors of the future happy and eager to raise the overall level of IT expertise within your company. As the human/machine partnership solidifies and evolves, the changing of roles is inevitable. In the days to come, the uniquely human skill remains the ability to envision ways to improve and drive business, not the tech behind it. To achieve this, the insights of tomorrow’s leaders are of absolute importance.last_img read more

  • Jokowi’s coalition parties divided over title of omnibus bill on job creation

first_imgThe PDI-P proposed changing the title of the bill to include aspects other than job creation, so that after its passage it would become the Law on Strengthening Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Cooperatives, National Industry and Job Creation.”For us, it’s impossible to create jobs if MSMEs, cooperatives and the national industry are not strong,” Rieke Diah Pitaloka of the PDI-P said.Rieke added that the bill’s title should have been changed from the beginning of the deliberation process, as it would affect its substance, saying the draft itself still needed many changes due to the effect of the pandemic COVID-19 that hit the country’s economy.“Our national economic backbone is now the MSME sector, in which the number of people involved has reached around 60 million,” she said, citing government data. The Gerindra Party, meanwhile, proposed reverting to the initial name of the bill, cipta lapangan kerja (job creation bill) — instead of the current cipta kerja (jobs bill).Read also: Guide to omnibus bill on job creation: 1,028 pages in 10 minutes“The title should return to the original from Jokowi’s speech at his presidential inauguration in the People’s Consultative Assembly [MPR], so that the substance would meet the President’s main objectives,” Heri Gunawan of Gerindra said. The NasDem Party proposed a change to “ease of doing business bill”, to include the notions of facilitating investment and integrating licensing procedures.”We see that almost 80 percent of the bill is about easing investment, so the spirit of job creation is no longer there,” NasDem’s Fauzi Amro said. “The government has also decided to postpone the deliberations of labor provisions of the bill.”Parties in the ruling coalition have expressed differences over the bill several times. The Golkar Party, of which the chairman is the current Coordinating Economic Minister, Airlangga Hartarto, is considered the main supporter of the bill while the PKB, the political party of which Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah belonged to, often disagrees with the ruling PDI-P.The PDI-P, whose constituents are generally working class, has been reluctant to pursue the bill from the outset. It was the only party to urge lawmakers not to rush into its deliberation, citing public objections to the bill.Members of the public, especially workers, still strongly objected to the bill despite the government’s decision to delay the deliberation of labor provisions within the bill, demanding the latter to be completely dropped instead, as they argue that the content of the bill undermines labor rights and environmental protection.Lawmakers of the PDI-P and NasDem have also voiced opposition to the domestic food supply provisions in the bill, arguing that it could weaken farmers’ position and favor importers.Topics : Political factions at the House of Representatives are divided over the title of the controversial omnibus bill on job creation, with four parties in President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s ruling coalition demanding a change.Of the six parties in the government coalition, only the Golkar Party and the National Awakening Party (PKB) opposed any change during a semi-virtual hearing between the House’s Legislation Body (Baleg) and the government on Wednesday. The others, namely the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the Gerindra Party, the NasDem Party and the United Development Party (PPP), had different views on what the piece of legislation should be called.last_img read more

  • Serie A: 10-man Bologna Fight Back to Stun Inter Milan

first_imgRomelu Lukaku had opened the scoring when he tapped in the rebound after Lautaro Martinez’s header hit the post.Martinez missed the chance to double his side’s lead from the spot, after Bologna’s Roberto Soriano was sent off. Both sides finished with 10 men as Alessandro Bastoni was shown a second yellow card with the score poised at 1-1.Antonio Conte’s Inter remain third in the table, four points behind Lazio, while Bologna move up to ninth.Speaking after the game, exasperated Inter Milan coach Antonio Conte blamed himself after watching his team collapse again on Sunday.“There’s a great, indeed enormous, disappointment,” said Conte whose side were leading 10-man Bologna when they missed a second-half penalty and conceded twice to go down 2-1 to late goals by Gambian pair Musa Juwara and Musa Barrow.“We managed to lose a match that we should have brought home comfortably. I’m angry with myself as the coach and responsible for what happens on the pitch,” said Conte.“The players must also be angry with themselves although they only have a small part of the blame.”There was a long delay before Conte spoke to the press and some Italian media reports said he was involved in a meeting with club directors.“It’s right to question all of us, first of all me because I was called to bring Inter back to victory after so many years,” he said. “Of course, it won’t happen overnight but this situation brings a lot of bitterness.“We have not reached the standard we set ourselves. Everyone has to show they want to rise above the past years, otherwise it’s right to make other decisions”.Bologna coach Sinisa Mihajlovic was happy with the result but also frustrated that his team, who are ninth, took so long to get going.“We were poor in the first 20 minutes, we were afraid and there were too many wayward passes,” he said. “We really looked a completely different team in the second half.“It wasn’t easy to be a goal down with ten men; this is a great victory, with character and conviction. However, we’ve sometimes waited to concede before we start to play. That’s not okay – we need to play from the off.”Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegram The 10 men of Bologna staged a stunning comeback to deny Inter Milan the chance to move within a point of second-placed Lazio in Serie A.Former Super Eagles winger, Victor Moses was not listed in Inter’s line up for the game.Musa Barrow struck the winner from inside the box late on, just six minutes after Musa Juwara equalised.last_img read more

first_imgAmir Sayoud starred for Belouizdad, creating the first goal for Ahmed Gasmi midway through the opening half and scoring the second eight minutes from time.African newcomers Paradou AC, the other Algerian contenders in the second-tier Confederation of African Football competition, were even more impressive, hammering Guinean visitors CI Kamsar 3-0.The most convincing first leg winners, though, were two other debutants, Esae of Benin and Triangle United of Zimbabwe, who each scored five unanswered goals.Esae triumphed 5-0 away to ASC Snim of Mauritania in Nouakchott and Triangle exploited home advantage to thump Rukinzo of Burundi 5-0 in a southeastern Zimbabwe town.Ulrich Dah Acheffon scored the first and fifth goals for Esae, who had completed their demolition job with a quarter of the match remaining.Allan Takarwisa led the Triangle goal romp, bagging a first half brace to help his club to a 3-0 advantage by half-time.US Ben Guerdane of Tunisia also scored five goals as they trounced Amarat United from South Sudan 5-1 with Brazilians Melo dos Santos and Ricardo Pereira bagging two goals each.Return matches are scheduled for the weekend of August 23/25.Share on: WhatsApp Desabre joined Pyramids after AFCON. • Steelers’ offense impressive as Mendenhall has breakout game

first_imgRashard Mendenhall came out of coach Mike Tomlin’s doghouse blazing as he ripped off 165 yards on 29 carries filling in for the injured Willie Parker. He looked extremely impressive as he mixed power running with speed, and was just as effective inside as he was outside. The Steelers dominated the first half as they have all season, jumping off to a 21-0 halftime lead. But like all the other games this season they fell apart in the fourth quarter, almost blowing a 28-7 lead before finally pulling it out 38-28. Unlike the other games, the offense, behind the excellent play of Roethlisberger and the running of Mendenhall, was able to save the victory. The big difference however, was the effectiveness of the running game.Because the Steelers held the ball most of the game and the Chargers fell behind early, LaDainian Tomlison only touched the ball seven times for 15 yards, which led to the game being mostly in the hands of Phillip Rivers. And after the costly special teams giveaways, he made a game of it. He was 21 of 36 for 254 yards and three touchdowns. The Chargers, 2-2, were supposed to run away with their division, now find themselves two games behind the undefeated Denver Broncos who they play this week. The Steelers, on the other hand, find themselves right back in the race for the AFC North title after watching the Baltimore Ravens lose to the New England Patriots 27-21, which dropped them back into a first place tie with the Cincinnati Bengals who barely got past the winless Cleveland Browns in an overtime 23-20 win.Next week the Steelers face the lowly 1-3 Detroit Lions,  who finally got a win two weeks ago. The Lions fell back into their losing ways last week as they were destroyed by the Chicago Bears 48-24, after playing the Bears even in the first half, 21-21. Following the Lions, the Steelers play division foe Cleveland which just may be the worst team in football, if not the Lions. The Steelers should pad their stats against these teams if they don’t take them lightly and beat themselves. Otherwise it should be two easy victories before facing the powerful Vikings led by Brett Favre and the best running back in the game, Aaron Peterson. The Lions gave up 121 yards on just 12 carries to Matt Forte, while the Bears held Kevin Smith to just 30 yards on 19 carries, so the Steelers running game should stay on track. Rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford has looked good at times, especially two weeks ago in their only victory, and the first half in the Bears game. He finished 24 of 36 for 296 yards. The exciting part of the Lions game may be letting the Steelers find a way to let the them into this game in the second half or fourth quarter. BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE —Rashard Mendenhall rushed for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Steelers 38 -28 win over the San Diego Chargers. The offensive line, headed by Chris Kemoeatu, put forth their best performance in years blocking for the passing game as well as opening holes for the running game. And Mendenhall took full advantage of every little crack as he burst through them for one of the greatest running games in Steeler history.Ben Roethlisberger also had a great game as he was 26 of 33 for 333 yards and two touchdowns, hitting six different receivers. Hines Ward led all receivers with eight catches for 113 yards and became the first Steeler wide receiver to get 10,000 receiving yards in a career.Heath Miller had eight catches for 70 yards, Santonio Holmes four receptions for 52 yards and rookie Mike Wallace two for 47 yards.center_img END ZONE CELEBRATION— Hines Ward leap frogs over Mewelde Moore to celebrate Moore’s 19-yard touchdown catch at Heinz Field Oct 4. Ward, who had eight catches for 113 yards, became the first Steeler wide receiver to get 10,000 receiving yards in a career. The Steelers put together possibly their greatest offensive game of the past two seasons against the San Diego Chargers Sunday, but still almost lost it after turnovers by the special teams cost them 14 points. But unlike the previous two games, they were able to pull off the victory. Now they have what should be two easy games before facing the tough Minnesota Vikings.last_img read more

  • Matfield named interim Springbok captain

first_img3 June 2014 Victor Matfield will captain the Springboks in this month’s Castle Lager Incoming Series, which includes two tests against Wales, one against Scotland, and one against a World XV, in the absence of the injured Jean de Villiers. Matfield will lead South Africa for the first time since his return to rugby in Saturday’s match against a star-studded World XV at Newlands in Cape Town. Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer made the announcement of Matfield’s appointment in Cape Town on Tuesday. The 110-test veteran last captained the Springboks at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand in 2011.‘It wasn’t an easy decision’ “Victor’s appointment as interim captain is something I thought long and hard about and it wasn’t an easy decision to make,” said Meyer. “The three candidates we considered, Victor, Bismarck du Plessis and Fourie du Preez, were all very strong options. “We’re in a fortunate situation that we have a strong leadership group in the current squad, which includes Victor, Bismarck, Fourie, Bryan Habana, Schalk Burger, Flip van der Merwe, Duane Vermeulen and Francois Louw.”‘A logical option’ Meyer said Matfield’s experience played a crucial role in his decision to hand him the captain’s armband. “It’s only a short-term appointment as Jean will take over as captain again once he’s recovered from his injury. Victor was a logical option. He knows the pressure associated with being Springbok captain as he’s been there before and he has vast captaincy experience at all levels of the game. “I also firmly believe Bismarck has improved a lot in this role with the Cell C Sharks and I know he can still lead the Springboks. He’s 100 percent supportive of Victor and he will remain one of our vice-captains for the season. “Victor is someone who has the respect of all the players in our squad, as well as world-wide in rugby. He’s achieved a lot and has always put the team’s interests first, while most of the players in our squad have already played under him.”Grateful Matfield, who has captained the Springboks in 17 tests, said he is very grateful for the trust shown in him by the national coach. “I’m here to serve the team and would like to make a positive contribution,” he explained. “When I decided to return to playing rugby, my aim was to be good enough to make the Springbok team. I never dreamt of leading the team again and it’s a massive honour. “The coach has built a strong core of leaders and I’m fortunate to have guys such as Bismarck, Fourie, Bryan, Duane, Schalk, Flip and Francois alongside me. And we’ll have Jean and Adriaan Strauss back with the team soon, which will add to the depth of leadership.” Matfield will captain the Springboks in their four matches in June. The vice-captains will be Du Plessis and Du Preez. SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

  • President Trump to address Farm Bureau members in January at Annual Convention in Nashville

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Donald J. Trump, the 45th president of the United States, will address farm and ranch families from across the nation at the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 99th Annual Convention, Jan. 5-10 in Nashville, Tenn.“The American Farm Bureau Federation is honored to host our nation’s president,” said AFBF President Zippy Duvall, a beef and poultry farmer from Georgia. “President Trump has said all along that he would make sure agriculture has a seat at the table when it comes to the top issues facing America’s farmers and ranchers. Now, it is our privilege to reserve a spot for him at our podium.”Duvall considers President Trump’s announced speech as a sign of the high regard in which the nation’s chief executive holds America’s farm and ranch families.“Farmers and ranchers and our rural communities are the bedrock of our nation. President Trump knows that, and his willingness to devote his time to talk directly with Farm Bureau members will be a memorable occasion,” Duvall said. After three consecutive years of decline in farm sector profits, President Trump will speak to Farm Bureau members during a period of prolonged economic challenge across farm country. Profits have fallen and many farmers have seen declines in equity. Though the Agriculture Department forecasts that farm profits will be relatively stable in 2017, action on key issues on the president’s agenda could help farmers turn the corner as they head into the new year.“President Trump is fully aware of the economic difficulties farmers and ranchers have gone through these past few years,” Duvall said. “The economic issues he has outlined, including reform of our nation’s tax and regulatory systems, match many of the issues on Farm Bureau’s agenda.”President Trump’s executive order establishing the Interagency Task Force on Agriculture and Rural Prosperity, led by Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, highlights the importance his administration places on rural America, according to Duvall.“President Trump has assigned his team to focus on important pocketbook and quality-of-life issues to strengthen rural America, and those issues are front and center on his to-do list,” Duvall said. “We look forward to hearing the strategies that he and Secretary Perdue share for taking agriculture and rural America down the road toward renewed prosperity.”last_img read more
