  • French construction firms evacuate staff from Chernobyl

first_img Man arrested in Derry on suspicion of drugs and criminal property offences released PARIS, Feb 13, 2013 (AFP) – French construction firms Vinci and Bouygues said Wednesday they had evacuated as a precaution around 80 employees from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine after a section of the roof collapsed. The two companies are working on constructing the sarcophagus structure covering the reactor that exploded in 1986 in the world’s worst nuclear disaster.A section of the plant collapsed under the weight of snow but there were no injuries or any increase in radiation from the reactor, the country’s emergency agency said Wednesday.”The preliminary reason for the collapse was too much snow on the roof,” the agency said, adding that the radiation situation is “within the norm” and nobody was harmed in Tuesday’s incident. The roof was constructed after the 1986 disaster but is not part of the sarcophagus structure covering the reactor, it said. However the collapse underlines concerns about the condition of the now defunct nuclear plant over two-and-a-half-decades after the world’s worst nuclear disaster.Part of the roof and some of the walls at the plant’s machine room, close to the sarcophagus that seals the reactor number four which melted down in the 1986 accident, fell under the weight of the snow. The area of the accident is estimated about 600 square metres, (6,500 square feet), the emergency agency said.Structure not critical for protectionA statement on the website of the power station described the accident as the “partial failure of the wall slabs and light roof of the Unit 4 Turbine Hall.”It said that the damaged structure was not critical part of the protection structures at the power plant.”There are no changes in the radiation situation at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant industrial site and in the exclusion zone. There were no injuries,” it said.Chernobyl is only around 100 kilometres (60 miles) from Ukraine’s capital Kiev and lies close to the borders with Russia and Belarus. The area around the plant is still very contaminated and is designated as a depopulated “exclusion zone”.Amid concerns about the state of the sarcophagus, an arch-shaped structure called the New Safe Confinement is being built nearby to slide over the existing sarcophagus covering the reactor. The EBRD is administering the fund to build the shelter with the help of donor contributions. When it is finished in 2015, the structure will weigh 20,000 tonnes and span 257 metres (almost 850 feet). Two workers were killed by the April 26, 1986 explosion and 28 other rescuers and staff died of radiation exposure in the next months. Tens of thousands of people needed to be evacuated and fears remain over the scale of damage to people’s health. In 1986 and 1987, the Soviet government sent more than half a million rescue workers, known as liquidators, to clear up the power station and decontaminate the surrounding area. However the total death toll from Chernobyl remains a subject of bitter scientific controversy, with estimates ranging from no more than a few dozen deaths directly attributable to the disaster to tens of thousands.Watch archived news footage of the original accident below: Facebook WhatsApp Pinterest WhatsApp News Dail to vote later on extending emergency Covid powers Dail hears questions over design, funding and operation of Mica redress scheme Google+ Previous articleConclave to elect new pope not before March 15th: VaticanNext articleMan charged over pensioner burglary in Tullamore admin Facebookcenter_img Man arrested on suspicion of drugs and criminal property offences in Derry Twitter French construction firms evacuate staff from Chernobyl Twitter Pinterest RELATED ARTICLESMORE FROM AUTHOR By admin – February 13, 2013 HSE warns of ‘widespread cancellations’ of appointments next week PSNI and Gardai urged to investigate Adams’ claims he sheltered on-the-run suspect in Donegal Google+last_img read more

  • CUNA files RBC2 comment letter, encourages stakeholders to weigh in

first_imgCUNA submitted its comment letter Friday on the National Credit union Administration’s revised risk-based capital plan (RBC2). While holding firm to the view that the rule is unnecessary and should be tabled, the letter offers a number of constructive suggestions to improve the rule since the agency appears determined to move forward.“I’ve said it before. I will keep saying this. A risk-based capital rule is a solution in search of a problem. What’s more, the current plan–though vastly improved from the original–is a solution that just won’t work in search of a problem that just does not exist,” CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle said.He added, “To the more than 1,200 of you that have already filed a comment letter, I thank you for participating in this important effort to improve the rule. For those who have not yet written, I encourage you to do so.”CUNA has created a body of resources to support credit unions’ RBC letter writing and has produced the video below describing key points of its 15-page comment letter. continue reading » 2SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

  • New Year’s resolution: Build a better member onboarding program

first_img continue reading » Successful onboarding requires two chief ingredients, says Stacey Collins, director of experience design at BECU ($18.8B, Tukwila, WA): Good content and good timing.Members typically join the credit union for a specific reason but are often unaware of the full scope of its offerings. Onboarding ideally educates members about products and services as well as underscores the value of these offerings. To do that well, the credit union must present members with the messages they need, when they need them. So, BECU created more personalized messages and rethought its onboarding schedule altogether.Onboarding In One-Third TimeIn late 2016, BECU crossed an important threshold: 1 million members. In the years since, membership at the nation’s fourth-largest credit union has grown at a faster pace than other credit unions with assets greater than $1 billion. It’s this membership growth that spurred BECU in 2017 to review its onboarding processes. ShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

  • Data: The key to a successful card portfolio

first_img continue reading » Understanding your members’ behavior gives you the opportunity to serve them effectively and in turn, increases your bottom line. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for credit unions to overlook existing cardholders as a significant opportunity to help stimulate portfolio growth and increase profitability. With the use of data, you can identify trends that will help you to ensure that you are offering the right incentives, rewards, and services that will not only retain your existing cardholders, but also attract new prospects. What can data do for you?Data can open the door to product and service opportunities that your credit union did not offer in the past. Also, by utilizing data from your card portfolios, as well as home and auto loan applications, you will have a vivid picture of each member that will help you to create unique member experiences. In the end, you can feel confident that you are offering a competitive card product and doing what is required to stay “top of wallet.” With rich data you can:Offer Your Best Members the Best Rates – Review cardholder data annually and implement a risk-based strategy to offer your members better rates based on their profile. • 5 tips for effective goal setting

first_img ShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr Like many, my organization uses the month of January for individual reviews – both to evaluate the previous year’s progress and set new goals for the next 12 months. Prior to the individual reviews, we go through our organizational review and goal setting in December so our efforts are building toward the same outcomes. It’s important that these goals are measurable, so you can see how far you’ve come, and also that they set the company and individual up for more growth and success.Members of Forbes Communications Council have shared ways they work with employees to ensure annual goals increase engagement and productivity. Here are five that particularly resonate with me:Plan for it. Set aside time dedicated solely to working on goals. Also take into account any costs for training or events that are needed to achieve them.Mentor your employees. As a leader, it’s important to help those on your team develop their skills, whether that’s working directly with them or connecting them with others to learn from. continue reading »last_img read more

  • Compliance: FASB to host roundtable on CECL issues Monday

first_img ShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) will conduct a public roundtable discussion Monday to discuss additional views on its current expected credit loss (CECL) standard. CUNA will attend  the discussion, and had previously pushed FASB to take opportunities for additional feedback on implementation of the standard, as well as develop compliance resources with regulators including NCUA.According to FASB, the discussion will provide stakeholders with an opportunity to discuss issues with the standards, and staff will present research into some issues raised, and will also discuss FASB consideration of transition issues.CUNA is concerned with the direct effect the standard will have on credit unions’ financial positions, as well as the compliance burden that comes along with it.CECL, adopted in 2016, uses an “expected loss” measurement for the recognition of credit losses. FASB recently finalized a CUNA-backed delay in implementation to give credit unions and other entities more time to come into compliance. continue reading »last_img read more

  • The biggest fair of healthy eating this year in Malinska

first_imgThis year, too, the Food Revolution Day is being held in Malinska, which was launched in Croatia on the initiative of an enthusiast, Sabine Barbiš. This event, which was launched primarily for the purpose of educating people, is now gathering a large number of people for the third year in a row and enjoys the growing support of the Tourist Board. The rich program, which includes the fair, begins on Saturday, May 26, and on that day the Food Revolution, the movement of the famous chef Jamie Oliver, is celebrated all over the world to promote healthy eating, healthy living, local food production and purchase. public institutions. For the visitors of the event, which will be held at SRU Lastavice, the stars of the Masterchef show will cook again, some for the third year in a row, and some for the first time: Ratko Iveković, Časlav Matijević, Šime Sušić and Ante Martić. All of them, out of love for (real) food and faith in the goals of this project, volunteer to cook imaginative free meals! They will be joined by the medical staff of the Health Center of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, which will complete the whole of this health promotion from 14 pm to 18 pm, by testing blood pressure and blood sugar and talking to visitors. Also, there will be a mini eco fair throughout the day, where local producers of healthy food and natural cosmetics will present themselves. From 10 am to 16 pm, while the Masterchefs are preparing lunch, in the premises of the Municipality of Malinska, a series of lectures by nutritionists, doctors and psychologists was organized on the topic of healthy nutrition of children; lectures on basic foods and balanced adult nutrition; testing the proportion of muscle and fat tissue of the body and basal metabolism; presentation of effective exercises of a renowned personal trainer; a lecture on the importance of probiotics and lectures on soil fertility and organic food production and on the psychology of nutrition, for example, conscious eating and emotional craving for food.In cooperation with HACPN (Croatian Academic Center for Applied Nutrition), a survey on the nutrition of primary school children has been conducted for several years. Although they live on the island, where healthy food is available and the influence of grandma’s kitchens is still strong, although some schools and kindergartens declare themselves as “eco”, which includes a healthy menu for the little ones, it is surprising how unhealthy children actually eat.The Food Revolution is just aimed at children and their parents. Through such public actions, the community becomes acquainted with the movement and its goals. In small steps, a program of education of parents and children is created, so that they know the basics of a healthy diet and so that children grow into healthy people full of energy and potential for learning. You can join Food Revolution by cooking on Food Revolution Day (amateur chefs are also welcome), spreading the word about the event or as a sponsor, for example groceries. The movement is entirely voluntary and non-profit and as such depends on sponsors. As we have already written, the most beautiful feature of a tourist offer that has the greatest potential to cause all the consequent changes to the cultural offer, economic profit and the economy as a whole are manifestations. And this beautiful and healthy story from the island of Krk shows us that we can do a lot, that only will and work are important, and that work over the years is recognized and respected by institutions. We must mention that the pre-season is still going on, but this could not be a nicer overture to the summer season on Krk.last_img read more
