The Department of Public Health andRecreation is a multidisciplinary department that awards B.S.degrees in Public Health and Recreation, and a Master of PublicHealth (MPH) degree with a concentration in community healtheducation. Our undergraduate programs offer concentrations inpopulation data science, community health education, recreationmanagement, and recreation therapy. A Master of Recreation will belaunched in the fall of 2021. The PHR Department is one of thelargest and fastest-growing units within the College of Health and HumanSciences . We areall committed to the sustainable growth and meaningfultransformation of our department in order to respectfully meet boththe needs of our students and the needs of professional fieldswithin public health and recreation service areas not only here inSan Jose and Northern California, but also nationally and globally.As leaders in higher education, our programs integrate innovative,social justice, and therapeutic approaches to advancing personaland community health through engaged scholarship, applied research,and direct service-learning opportunities.Required Qualifications Responsibilities Teach courses in undergraduate and graduate Public Healthprograms (classroom, online/hybrid formats), such as health policy,health justice, multicultural health, quantitative and qualitativemethods, and/or health communication ( Department Overview and Curricula );Leadership in the Public Health programs, including oversightfor ongoing assessment of student learning objectives and programoutcomes, student advising, alignment of online and campus courses,continuous improvement of teaching and learning, and adherence toall CEPH accreditation requirements;Conduct research, develop successful grants, presentacademic/professional papers, regularly publish inacademic/professional journals, and contribute to the scholarshipof public health;Work with colleagues to co-develop the department’s strategicdirections, particularly regarding the linkages between publichealth, recreation, community engagement, and environmental/policystrategies for building healthy communities;Reflect and continuously improve upon one’s instructional,relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage andsupport historically underserved students;Engage in community and university outreach to develop andmaintain practicum/internship sites, curriculum resources,service-learning opportunities, alumni engagement, anddevelopment/advancement opportunities;Participate in analysis of and planning for the changingecology of higher education and the public health workforce,including the development and implementation of a strategic planand purposeful activities for continuing education/lifelonglearning, professional development, individual certification, andprogram accreditation;Participate in shared governance, usually in department,college, and university committee and other serviceassignments.Demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs ofa student population of great diversity – in age, culturalbackground, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation –through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies andadvisement.
