The attorney general sued following allegations of elder abuse and criminally negligent care against Pleasant Care facilities, which have been cited and fined more than 160 times by California health officials for regulatory violations in the last five years. In 2003, a patient at the company’s Ukiah facility couldn’t breathe and died after a nurse was unable to provide needed aid because certain equipment wasn’t kept in working order, state officials said. A year later, a resident at its Novato facility suffered a bed sore that went untreated so long that it ultimately killed the person. If the company doesn’t abide by the settlement, it could face fines of $6,000 for each violation and lose MediCal and Medicare health care funding. Separately, Pleasant Care of Northern California, a Pleasant Care Corp. subsidiary, still faces charges in a criminal case for allegedly providing negligent care to patients at its Napa facility, which is now closed, state officials said. The company is scheduled to enter pleas in the case today. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! The state’s second-largest nursing home chain must improve services and pay more than $1.3 million under a settlement with state authorities who examined two deaths linked to inadequate care, California Attorney General Bill Lockyer announced Wednesday. The deal requires Pleasant Care Corp. to pay for an independent monitor of its 30 facilities, enhance staff training and boost the number of nurses for each patient. The settlement was approved Wednesday by a judge in Los Angeles County. “All Californians are entitled to know that they are not putting personal life or health at risk when they or an elderly loved one is placed in the care of a nursing facility,” Lockyer said in a statement.
