  • Fitch projects 110GW of new solar capacity in Southeast U.S. by 2029

first_imgFitch projects 110GW of new solar capacity in Southeast U.S. by 2029 FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享S&P Global Market Intelligence ($):The Southeast U.S. could see about 110 GW of solar capacity additions from 2020 through 2029, even as federal tax subsidies for solar projects phase out, according to Fitch Solutions Macro Research. And the potential exists for even more solar in the long run, Fitch Solutions analysts wrote in a Jan. 10 report. Capacity additions are clustered in a few states, including North Carolina, Florida and Georgia, but other states with smaller solar markets could see growth as project costs continue to decline.Utilities’ long-term resource plans are among the key factors driving the Southeast’s boost in solar. Duke Energy Corp., NextEra Energy Inc. and its flagship utility Florida Power & Light Co., Entergy Corp., Tennessee Valley Authority, and Southern Co. subsidiary Georgia Power Co. plan to add a collective 13.5 GW of new solar capacity over the next 10 years.“Utilities continue to advance their renewable energy initiatives as wind and solar power plants are becoming increasingly economical,” Fitch Solutions said. “In addition, utilities are facing increased demand from customers to act on climate change.”State and local renewable portfolio standards and community solar initiatives are expected to play significant roles in growing solar capacity in southeastern states. While Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina are the only states in the region with renewable energy targets, Fitch Solutions noted that 23 cities and 4 counties pledged to reach 100% renewable energy, including Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Orlando, Fla. Local communities and utilities are increasingly working together to implement solar projects to meet customer demand, such as FPL’s “SolarTogether” community program that calls for installing 1,490 MW of new solar capacity.Commercial and industrial customers’ clean energy appetite is also feeding into the Southeast solar frenzy, particularly for states that do not have as many projects built. For example, Alabama’s current solar capacity will more than double once projects with electricity contracted to nonutility customers such as Facebook Inc. come online. “We expect additional renewable energy procurements to drive further significant growth in the Southeast U.S. solar industry, as the region will remain a top solar destination due to its highly suitable climate, land availability and proximity to large corporations and power-hungry data centers,” Fitch Solutions wrote.[Ellen Meyers]More ($): Fitch Solutions: Southeast U.S. set for solar boom despite sunsetting tax creditlast_img read more

  • Condemning wanton defiance of Constitution

first_imgDear Editor,I have observed that several of the media houses in Guyana underscored the fact that Canada was not one of the signatories when a joint statement was presented by Western diplomats following the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruling on July 12. The dictum had stated, “… It is important for the rule of law that all invoked actors abide by its ruling and the relevant provisions of the Constitution. We urge everyone to do so expeditiously”.Many supporters of the Government on social media used Canada’s absence in this latest joint statement by American Ambassador to Guyana, Sarah-Ann Lynch, United Kingdom High Commissioner to Guyana, Greg Quinn, and European Union Ambassador to Guyana, Jernej Videtic to state that Canada is “neutral” and “indifferent”, and wants no part in the politics of the country. However, nothing could be further from the truth.I contacted the High Commission of Canada to inquire about Canada’s apparent lack of interest to join other Western nations to encourage the politicians to abide with the Court rulings. A top official from the High Commission assured me that Canada has articulated the need for stakeholders to abide by the Constitution, and there is certainly no indifference to the goings-on in the country. Canada is still among the “ABC/EU” bloc that takes a strong interest in the happenings in Guyana.I urge the Guyanese people to contact various local and international outfits to condemn the apparent wanton defiance of the Constitution and let the Government know that it will not be business as usual with such audacious bravado.Yours truly,Dr DevanandBhagwanlast_img read more

  • Number of homeless children at highest figure ever recorded

first_imgFigures released by children’s charity Barnardos has revealed that 2,777 children are currently without a home – the highest number of homeless children ever recorded in Ireland.Source: BarnardosEarlier this year, the Government vowed to end by July the use of hotels and B&Bs as long-term accommodation for homeless families.Saturday last marked the start of July and presently there are 1,312 families in Ireland without a home, many of whom continue to live in hotels and B&Bs. Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy admits that they missed this deadline, adding that an extra €10 million will be allocated towards the family hub programme to accommodate 200 more families, as well as the 600 that are already moving in to such accommodation.June Tinsley, Barnardos Head of Advocacy said; “Being homeless has a profound effect on children’s health, well-being, development and life potential.“The Government promised to provide homeless families with more suitable accommodation by mid-2017 and this has not yet happened, meanwhile children and families suffer in inappropriate and unsuitable accommodation.“The Government needs to ensure suitable alternative accommodation for these families immediately. “Barnardos recommends that the Government prioritise building more social housing units to increase supply and reduce the over reliance on the private rented sector, while also ensuring that Rent Supplement and HAP rates are in line with market rents, preventing more families from losing their homes.”“A more aggressive approach is required to tackle the ever deepening housing crisis. These figures also do not reflect the number of ‘hidden homeless’ families who do not appear on the official register.“Thousands of families in Ireland are living in overcrowded, substandard or unsafe accommodation because they have no other options.”Number of homeless children at highest figure ever recorded was last modified: July 4th, 2017 by Elaine McCalligShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:BarnardosChildhoodHOMELESSNESSlast_img read more
