  • The mane concern

first_imgWhat is beauty? Fair skin, a full head of hair, being tall, being slim and in fair proportion. But this week’s release Bala is set to bust those myths, says lead actor Ayushmann Khurrana.”Everyone has their own definition of beauty. But I feel inner beauty is more important because physical beauty may not last, Khurrana told MAIL TODAY. This film tries to change the stereotypical concept of beauty. We raise questions and challenge the notions we’ve adopted over the years.”In the film, Khurrana plays a man with a rapidly receding hairline, and with it his confidence. He had to sit two-anda- half hours to put on prosthetics to look bald but that was the least of his challenges, he said. “You needed to be empathetic towards people who are suffering from baldness. There are two kinds of people, one who suffer from a complex due to this condition and those who are OK with it. Our film is about loving your self and that’s the transition Bala undergoes from [someone lacking self-esteem] to a really confident person,” he said.Co-star Bhumi Pednekar’s role is, however, a complete opposite to Bala. Nikita is dark-skinned but a strong confident, young lawyer who is rejected by prospective marriage partners for her colour.”There isn’t any moment we are making fun of someone’s colour,” said Pednekar. “This girl is empowering women, she’s very confident and stands for breaking every kind of societal norm and stigma attached to the colour obsession in India. She’s always been picked on for her colour and faced rude comments. That’s why she has all her defences up and she wants to change what people think.”advertisementPednekar believes this perception is overrated. “There are women who have been pushed to the extreme and I feel fortunate I’m part of such a film which I hope it’ll give confidence to people and celebrate who they are.” When questioned about playing the character during the press conference, Pednekar said as an actor it was her right to transform herself. “Even if I have to play a man in a film, I will.”Khurrana came to her rescue and said, “With that logic, a bald guy should be playing this role and a cricketer be playing [Ranveer Singh’s] character [in 83]. But at the same time what matters also is the credibility of the actor who garners a lot of audience appreciation. And Bhumi is a big right now, a great actress and most importantly she fits the part and the vision of the director. I think it’s a dream for every actor to transform. Otherwise we’ll end playing our self. I should be playing Ayushmann, she’ll play Yami [pointing to Yami Gautam] and she’ll play Bhumi. She’s an urban person as am I and we are playing middle class rural people in north India. I’m not that guy at all so how do I play the character?Like most of us, the stars have been plagued with complexes, agreed Khurrana. “I was skinny as a kid even though I was in the school sports team. But I was fit. I also had stage fright. Yes, it’s hard to believe as I’ve been an anchor and an actor. It’s because my father discovered some talent in me and worked on me. I could sing, dance and speak well but when I was in a group of people, I was very nervous. He made me participate in every declamation contest and debate, and made me perform on birthday parties so that it became a habit. That’s how I overcame my fears and complexes.”The film is not just about baldness, he added. “It could be your height, weight, skin colour, looks or hair whatever. I believe a person is full of complexes. The idea is to work out your strengths and be the best version of yourself.”last_img read more
